Description

The Bábolna National Stud is offering a newly acquired stallion for the 2023 breeding season to breeders in Hungary and the surrounding region: ÉCRIVAIN (by Lope De Vega – out of Sapphire Pendant).

The young stallion meets all major selection criteria – race performance, pedigree, conformation, and outstanding temperament – making him an exceptional opportunity for breeders.

Racing Performance:

Écrivain made a winning debut as a two-year-old in August at the prestigious Deauville meeting’s top maiden race. He then went on to win the Group 3 Prix des Chênes at Longchamp. His next start came in France’s premier two-year-old race, the Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère (Group 1), where he finished a close fourth, just one length behind the winner and future French 2,000 Guineas champion, Victor Ludorum.

At three, Écrivain began his season with a second place in the Group 3 Prix de Fontainebleau, finishing ahead of Victor Ludorum. Later that year, a wave of illness affected the yard of his trainer, Carlos Laffon-Parias, which negatively impacted Écrivain’s 2020 campaign.

As a four-year-old, after several Group 1-placed performances, Écrivain captured the Group 3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil at Chantilly. Notably, in this mile race, his top speed of 70.06 km/h remains among the fastest ever recorded in France.

At five, he was sent to race in the United States, but as with many European horses, the local racing style did not suit him – which opened the opportunity for his acquisition as a stallion prospect.

Pedigree:

Sire: Lope De Vega – winner of both the French 2,000 Guineas and the French Derby, and consistently ranked among the top five sires in Europe for several years. In 2022 alone, he produced over 60 individual Black Type performers. His stud fee is €125,000. Currently, Lope De Vega’s stallion sons stand only in England and Ireland, with fees ranging between €8,000 and €15,000.

Dam: Sapphire Pendant – raced in Ireland and achieved her best performance when finishing second in the Group 3 1,000 Guineas Trial
